Masters Programmes

As part of the NIHR INSIGHT Research Master studentships offered in South West Central, you will be able to take one of the two Masters in Research (MRes) programmes at either UWE Bristol or Bournemouth University.

The MRes programmes share a similar ethos; to inspire and equip researchers to work creatively and flexibly to understand and apply research so that they can make significant contributions to addressing research priorities in health and care.

MRes students will gain professional attributes to undertake high quality, impactful research. Opportunities to work with existing research teams, gain experience, build skills and knowledge to enhance working with others will ensure a broader impact. Our modular, student-centred learning approach blends in-person and online teaching, allowing for both full-time and part-time study. The programme includes 150 credits of compulsory modules and 30 credits of optional modules; totalling 180 credits required for a master’s degree, as illustrated below.

UWE Core Modules and Research Focus

• Core Modules (60 credits): These three compulsory modules cover the entire research process, from conceptualization to dissemination and implementation.
  • Preparation for Health and Care Research (30 Credits)
  • Qualitative Health and Care Research (15 Credits)
  • Quantitative Health and Care Research (15 Credits)
• Extended Research Project (90 credits): Comprising 50% of the MRes, this project allows you to gain practice-based research experience. You will work with academic and practitioner staff who are experts in health and care research, many of whom are involved in externally funded projects and are members of our research centres. Including the Centre for Health and Clinical Research and the Centre for Public Health and Wellbeing.
• Optional Modules and Placement Opportunities (30 credits)
  Optional modules (30 credits) enable you to tailor your studies to align with your professional and research interests. You also have the option to undertake research practice placements with NHS research delivery services, NIHR organisations, or academic research teams, providing valuable hands-on experience.

Assessment and Professional Development
Research project are assessed through a publication-ready format and a poster presentation. This will allow you to prepare work suitable for submission to peer-reviewed journals or for presentation at conferences. Additionally, students have access to a wide range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) modules, enhancing their skills and employability in health and social care research.

Our programme is specifically designed for health and care professionals, offering a flexible, student-focused curriculum that promotes equality, diversity, and inclusivity. During an Independent Research Project you’ll develop the skills necessary to enhance research capacity, leadership, and, most importantly, improve outcomes in health and care practice. Research Project and Assessment
As an MRes student, you will undertake 180 credits of independent research, supervised by both clinicians and academic experts. Your work will be assessed through a thesis (either traditional or integrated) and a viva voce examination. The integrated thesis format allows you to publish as part of your thesis, providing an excellent opportunity to contribute to your field early in your career.
